Auscultation

Auscultation or listening to the internal sounds of the body, is done to examine the respiratory system at the following surface markings:

  1. Apex of the lungs

    • Superior to medial 1/3 of clavicle

  2. Superior lobes anterior

    • 2nd intercostal space mid clavicular line

  3. Superior lobes posterior

    • Between cervical spine C7 & T3 thoracic vertebrae

  4. Inferior lobes bilaterally anterior

    • 6th intercostal space, mid-axillary line

  5. Inferior lobes posteriorly

    • between T3 & T10 thoracic vertebra

  6. Middle lobe right anterior

    • 4th intercostal space, mid-clavicular line.
