The bones of the hand can be categorized as:
Carpal bones - these are eight bones located in the wrist region.
Metacarpal bones - these are five bones that are related to each of the five digits.
Phalanges - these are the bones that make up each finger. There are three phalanges in each finger with the exception of the thumb which has two phalanges.
The bones of the foot help the foot withstand the weight of the body while providing mechanical support for soft tissues and can be categorize as:
Tarsal bones - these are seven bones located in the proximal foot, near the ankle region.
Metatarsal bones - these are five bones that are related to each of the five digits.
Phalanges - these are the bones that make up each toe. There are three phalanges in each toe with the exception of the big toe which has two phalanges.
The foot can be further categorized into three regions:
Hindfoot - this includes the talus and calcaneus bones.
Midfoot- this includes the navicular, cuboid and cuneiform bones.
Forefoot - this includes the metatarsals and phalanges.
The foot can also be divided up into three regions: (i) Hindfoot – talus and calcaneus; (ii) Midfoot – navicular, cuboid and cuneiforms; and (iii) Forefoot – metatarsals and phalanges.
