Muscles of the PosteriorThigh

The muscles of the posterior thigh region can be described as:

  1. Biceps femoris

    • This muscle originates on the lateral lip of the linea aspera of the femur and attaches to the head of the fibula

    • This muscle acts to extend at the hip joint and flex as well as laterally rotate the leg

  2. Semitendinosus

    • This muscle originates on the ischial tuberosity and attaches to the pes anserinus of the tibia

    • This muscle act to extend at the hip joint and flex as well as laterally rotate the leg

  3. Semimembranosus

    • This muscle originates on the ischial tuberosity and attaches to the medial condyle of the tibia

    • This muscle acts to extend at the hip joint and flex as well as medially rotate the leg
