Types of Muscles
There are over 600 skeletal muscles in the body that attach to bones and enable movement by contracting and relaxing. Skeletal muscles are striated in appearance and respond to voluntary stimuli from the nervous system.
Smooth muscles are non-striated muscles that are found lining the walls of hollow organs (except the heart) and blood vessels. They produce involuntary movements and are triggered by impulses from the autonomic nervous system.
Cardiac muscles are found in the layer of myocardium in the heart and have a striated appearance. Heart beats occur as a response to cardiac muscles receiving impulses from the cardiac conduction system.
